Scrubs Protection Turns Into Scrubs Fashion

By Alice Lane

There was a point in time during the history of medicine in which a surgeon would walk into an arena style operating room and literally cut a patient open with non-sterilized operating tools dressed in plain street clothes. Needless to say many operations were not successful and would end in death. This was not necessarily due to poor medical practice; it was due to poor sterilization or opportunistic diseases caused as a result of not performing the surgery in a sterile environment with sterile clothing after a sterile scrubbing. As the medical field matured, so did it its medical sterilization practices. The value of a sterile operating room with clean purified operating instruments was realized and embraced by the medical profession. In addition to the operating room and its instruments, the medical professionals' attire actually changed as well. This change infused a fundamental fashion change into the medical profession that would last into today. Hospital scrubs were worn to protect the medical professional from the bodily fluids of the sick or ailing as they performed their medical duties.

Hospital Scrubs were initially white and due to the fact that white could not hide operating room stains well and reflected the light in the operating room, the medical community adjusted the color to the common signature green. Green scrubs are what we all know very well today and associate to the modern day medical professional.

The medical community today allows many different styles and colors of discount scrubs to be worn in the profession. Some scrubs are chosen as a result of personal choice and others are a result of administrative office choice. Regardless of who makes the choice as to which type of scrub the medical professional wears, the fact remains that today's scrubs market is growing and its consumers are becoming very fashion conscious.

There are a large selection of discount medical scrubs to select from in many colors and styles. Hospital scrubs still fill the initial need in which they were created however they now are available to the masses and the professional community to be used for medical work or just plain comfort.
It is very interesting that a uniform created for the medical profession designed to keep medical professionals clean has transcended the fashion world and found a home in the non-medical community as well.
